Os lantanídeos e actinídeos são grupos de elementos químicos que possuem subníveis f não preenchidos. Os lantanídeos, que vão do cério (número atômico 58) ao lutécio (número atômico 71), são metais com reatividade semelhante aos metais alcalino-terrosos e são usados em ligas, refino de petróleo e dispositivos ópticos. Os actinídeos, que vão do tório (número atômico 90) ao laurêncio (número atômico 103), são todos radioativos, com apenas os quatro primeiros encontrados naturalmente na Terra. Eles são utilizados em aplicações que aproveitam sua radioatividade, como em marca-passos e usinas nucleares. Ambos os grupos são considerados elementos de transição interna e não têm números de grupo específicos na tabela periódica, sendo posicionados entre os grupos 3 e 4.
